Boboli and Bardini gardens

Сад Боболи, фонтан Тритона, работа Стольдо Лоренци

The Boboli Gardens, attached to the Pitti Palace, are the largest formal Italian garden in Florence. As so many Florentine gardens, it is situated not in front of, but behind the main building.

Characterisitc of Italian gardens, Boboli is located on a hill, it includes many water features and is almost entirely green: the green of box and lawn, which, combined, are perhaps the most distinctive element of the Italian style.

Also characteristic, are many wooded areas, called “selvaggina”, where in the old days hunts took place. Immediately facing the back of Palazzo Pitti is the amphitheatre, which was at times flooded and mock naval battles ennacted.

The garden, or more precisely, its initial nucleus, was designed in the XVI century by Niccolò il Tribolo, commitioned by the first lady of the Florentine state – Eleonora da Toledo, wife of Cosimo I. Later on, in XVII century, the garden was enlarged, including labyrinths, green arches and grottos, creating a Baroque garden.

During this guided tour we walk though the Boboli gardens, this outstanding piece of landscape architecture. We will see its green architecture and the works of art decorating it – by Ammanati, Giambologna, Buontalenti.

After visiting the Boboli gardens, the guided tour continues in the Bardini garden, situated next door and also runnig along the old city walls. This garden is more characterisitc of the English style, whith more emphasis on seasonal flowerings. From this garden a magnificient view of Florence can be enjoyed.
